Presented for the Stott-Bediako Forum

Obed Manwatkar, a PhD research scholar at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences in Allahbad, India prepared this presentation to explore reconciliation within the caste system in India, where much of the population remains oppressed and excluded.

Expressing the Gospel in Hindu terms has not been effective. Communicating the Gospel in overly- Christian terms has also borne little fruit. Because of these well- intentioned, but mis-directed attempts in sharing Truth with low castes, missions have seen very little fruit from these peoples. Today, the OBCs (other backward castes) of India collectively represent the largest concentration unreached people groups on the planet. Today, Many OBCs are embracing the message of Jesus and there is a need to explain them in a context they understand.

For 2,500 years, India’s OBCs have been enslaved under the caste system. Today, millions of them are openly rejecting the Hinduism of the upper castes and are seeking a way out of casteism. This research paper presents Jesus as the God who dignifies humankind, and the Reconciler of peoples across gender and caste barriers. In his Kingdom they find freedom!
