Series: Art and Theology

A conversation featuring: Zach Stewart and Nina Mantalaba

Produced by: Nina Mantalaba

What does it look like to do theology through art? Art has a way of connecting us to God in a way that is experiential and filled with stories, practices, and emotions. Art invites us to deepen our understanding of God, ourselves, and our world. We are excited to get to know various artists through this series and share their work with you!

In this episode, we discuss Zach Stewart’s art featured in the music video for “The Medicine,” a song composed by Common Hymnal, Dee Wilson, and Alex Aiono. We invite you to reflect with us on the experience of creating art that intertwines praise and protest and how art can be used as a space and an invitation.

Zach Stewart

Zach is a creative. He loves creativity in all its forms and is interested in making art that draws people to the table to talk about injustice, so that they can then imagine a world that is a delight to all who live in it. For him, the table has often been a space in which to encounter the Church. His art has spanned topics such as colonization, lament, racism, and much more. Through this piece and other videos he’s done, he aims to weave together scripture and storytelling.
