Series: Art and Theology

A conversation featuring: Daniela Améstegui and Nina Mantalaba

Produced by: Nina Mantalaba

What does it look like to do theology through art? Art has a way of connecting us to God in a way that is experiential and filled with stories, practices, and emotions. Art invites us to deepen our understanding of God, ourselves, and our world. We are excited to get to know various artists through this series and share their work with you!

In this episode, we discuss Daniela Amestegui’s art piece titled “Advent” from her larger collection called “Pallay: Andean Weaving of Liturgy and Design.” We invite you to reflect with us on this piece of art that roots us in this season of anticipation, exemplifies a creative approach to liturgy, and inspires us to do art and theology from our local contexts.

“Advent” from Pallay

Daniela Améstegui

I’m a graphic designer from Cochabamba, Bolivia who after a few years practicing my career decided to study theology and came to live in Vancouver, Canada. During my years of studies, I discovered a great love and passion for my Bolivian roots. I also began to explore the unique ways the gospel shines through my culture and have since become hungry for more expressions of contextualization. It is my heart’s desire to use my skills in graphic design to help with these expressions since I firmly believe visual communication is a great way to reach and inspire my people.
