POR MISERICORDIA Y JUSTICIA ANTE LAS TEOLOGÍAS DE MUERTE Y DOMINIO
Se cumple un año de la atroz acción de Hamas contra la población civil judía y del inicio de la represalia del Estado de Israel. Una reacción que ha dejado ya cerca de 42.000 muertos reportados (cerca de 18.000 de ellos niños), miles más bajo los escombros en Gaza y más de 2.000 muertos en Líbano. Ante esta situación, como seguidores y seguidoras de Jesucristo en América Latina, nos unimos a la multitud de voces alrededor del mundo en solidaridad y búsqueda de una justicia que conduzca a la paz.
Suscribimos esta declaración una semana después del 4to Congreso de Lausana en Incheon, Corea del Sur, cuyo liderazgo ofreció una vergonzosa disculpa pública por la intervención de Ruth Padilla DeBorst, en la que condenó la indiferencia hacia quienes sufren guerra y violencia alrededor del mundo y destacó el dolor de los palestinos. Nuestra fe en Cristo nos mueve a pronunciarnos en defensa de quienes sufren en manos de sistemas políticos, económicos y religiosos que perpetúan la cultura de la colonización y el dominio, que se traduce en persecución y violencia. Pedimos disculpas a nuestros hermanos y hermanas palestinas por el dolor que les causó la postura pastoral y éticamente inaceptable del liderazgo del congreso.
Asimismo, como ciudadanos evangélicos:
- Condenamos los ataques y secuestros a personas civiles, tanto israelíes como palestinas, especialmente a familias indefensas y niños.
- Repudiamos la reacción desmedida del Estado de Israel y su avance en la ocupación de tierras que no le fueron cedidas en 1948 (acto que en sí ya expropió tierras a cerca de 750.000 palestinos), así como la violencia sistemática a la que el pueblo palestino ha sido sometido por mano del gobierno sionista de Israel por más de siete décadas, incluyendo el uso de fósforo blanco, la interrupción del suministro de agua, alimentos, combustible y electricidad, el bombardeo de escuelas, hospitales, lugares de culto y centros de distribución de alimentos.
- Rechazamos el (mal) uso de los textos bíblicos para justificar la limpieza étnica de las poblaciones originarias del territorio, y el (mal) uso del nombre de Dios para promover la violencia y la ideología religiosa nacionalista en contra de los musulmanes.
- Nos preocupa el apoyo incuestionado y acrítico de muchas iglesias evangélicas al Estado de Israel y animamos a líderes y teólogos cristianos a conocer el contexto histórico más amplio y las raíces profundas de este conflicto, que tiene una historia de 75 años de ocupación militar opresiva y racista que constituye el crimen de apartheid.
- Reprobamos las ideologías sionistas que bendicen la guerra y hacen a todos sus propulsores cómplices de la violencia y opresión que ejerce Israel sobre sus vecinos.
- Denunciamos la maquinaria bélica y el negocio de la guerra que beneficia económicamente a unas pocas personas y pone en jaque la vida y el bienestar de millones alrededor del mundo.
- Desechamos el legado de la “teoría de la guerra justa” que se usó para consentir el uso de la bomba atómica sobre civiles inocentes en Japón durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, aprobar la destrucción de Irak (hecho que también denunciamos en Lausana III en Terrorism and the war in Iraq: A Christian Word From Latin America, Buenos Aires, 2004), sostener los presentes ataques en Gaza y Líbano y convalidar toda escalada de violencia en la región.
Finalmente, nos identificamos con todas las iglesias y organizaciones cristianas del mundo que desafían el dominio de ideologías de poder colonizador y las supremacías político-religiosas, y hacemos un llamado a líderes, lideresas, teólogas y teólogos de América Latina a reconocer la tradición bíblica de justicia y misericordia como fue proclamada por Moisés (Dt 10:18; 16:18–20; 32:4) y los profetas (Is 1:17; 61:8; Mi 2:1–3, 6:8; Am 5:10–24), y que fue ejemplificada y encarnada en Jesucristo (Mt 25:34–46; Lc 1:51–53; 4:16–21). Exhortamos a los evangélicos del mundo a promover activamente no la guerra y el poderío de las armas, sino la autodeterminación de los pueblos, la reconciliación y la paz.
POR EL REINO DE DIOS Y SU JUSTICIA,
MERCY AND JUSTICE IN THE FACE OF THEOLOGIES OF DEATH AND DOMINION
On the first anniversary of Hamas’ atrocious action against the Jewish civilian population and Israel’s retaliation—which has already resulted in nearly 42,000 reported deaths (about 18,000 of them children) and thousands more under the rubble, along with more than 2,000 dead in Lebanon—we, as followers of Jesus Christ in Latin America, join thousands of voices around the world in solidarity and in search of justice that leads to peace.
We sign this statement one week after the 4th Lausanne Congress, held in Incheon, South Korea, in which the leadership of the Lausanne movement issued a shameful public apology for the intervention of Ruth Padilla DeBorst, where she condemned the indifference towards those suffering from war and violence around the world and highlighted the pain of the Palestinians. Our faith in Christ moves us to stand with those who suffer at the hands of political, economic, and religious systems that perpetuate the culture of colonization and dominion, resulting in persecution and violence. Therefore, we apologize to our Palestinian brothers and sisters for the pain caused by the uncaring and ethically unacceptable stance taken by the leadership of the congress.
In this same spirit, as Evangelical citizens:
- We condemn the attacks on civilians and abductions, both Israeli and Palestinian, especially when it has to do with defenseless families and children.
- We repudiate the totally disproportionate retaliation and the growing occupation by the state of Israel of lands not granted to it in 1948 (an act that in itself already expropriated land from around 750,000 Palestinians), and the systematic violence to which the Palestinian people have been subjected at the hands of Israel’s Zionist government for more than seven decades, including the use of white phosphorus, interruption of food, water, fuel, and electricity supplies, and the bombing of schools, hospitals, places of worship, and food distribution centers.
- We reject the misuse of biblical texts to justify the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous populations of the territory and the misuse of God’s name to promote violence and a nationalist religious ideology against Muslims.
- We are concerned about the unquestioning and uncritical support of many evangelical churches for the state of Israel, and we encourage Christian leaders and theologians to understand the broader historical context and deep roots of this conflict, which has a 75-year history of an oppressive and racist military occupation that constitutes the crime of apartheid.
- We disapprove of the Zionist ideologies that bless the war and make all their proponents complicit in the violence and oppression Israel exercises over its neighbors.
- We denounce the war machine and the business of war that economically benefits a few people and jeopardizes the lives and well-being of millions around the world.
- We discard the legacy of the «just war theory» that was used to permit the use of the atomic bomb on innocent civilians in Japan during World War II, to approve the destruction of Iraq (which we also denounced at Lausanne III in Terrorism and the war in Iraq: A Christian Word From Latin America, Buenos Aires, 2004), to sustain the current attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, and validate the escalation of violence in the region.
Finally, we identify with all churches and Christian organizations worldwide that challenge the dominion of ideologies of colonizing power and political-religious supremacy. Therefore, we call on leaders and theologians in Latin America to recognize the biblical tradition of justice and mercy as proclaimed by Moses (Dt 10:18; 16:18–20; 32:4) and the prophets (Is 1:17; 61:8; Mic 2:1–3, 6:8; Am 5:10–24), and which was exemplified and incarnated in Jesus Christ (Mt 25:34–46; Lk 1:51–53; 4:16–21). We urge world evangelicals to actively promote not war and the might of arms, but the self-determination of peoples, reconciliation and peace.
